Amanda Banks is a self-taught mixed-media fiber artist residing and practicing in North Georgia, where the immediate rural landscapes provide a source of energy, inspiration, and material.
Their work depends on and responds to the environments they inhabit, guiding the visual outcome of many pieces. Amanda uses their surroundings as a source of materials- trash picked up from the street, second-hand yarn and fabric, boxes of physical memories and forgotten things, or treasures foraged in the woods. This practice of intentional gathering and holding guides the timing and process of her work and allows the materials to act as a catalyst for creativity and exploration. Amanda has taught workshops privately and in collaboration with educational institutions. She has most recently exhibited at Spruill Gallery, Echo Contemporary, Stoveworks Gallery, and Moon Gallery on the campus of Berry College in Rome, GA, where she co-curated the third annual Black History Month exhibition Cultivating Black Futures (February 2024). Amanda is an alumni resident at Arrowmont Pentaculum in Gatlinburg, TN, Stoveworks in Chattanooga, TN, and an upcoming resident at Chautauqua School of Art (June 2024). She is currently listening to and facilitating a conversation between metals and fibers, ideating immersive installations, and planning collaborative community-based projects.
